Microsuction · Same-day available

Earwax removal in Bristol.

Safe, gentle earwax removal by microsuction — performed by a specialist audiologist under direct microscope vision. Both ears, £100. Same-day appointments routinely available.

Why microsuction

The gold-standard method for safe wax removal.

Microsuction uses a binocular operating microscope and a low-pressure surgical suction device to remove earwax under direct vision. Unlike ear syringing or irrigation, no water is introduced into the ear canal — which makes microsuction safer for people with a history of perforated eardrum, ear surgery, recurrent infections, or hearing aid use.

The procedure is performed at Bristol Hearing Clinic by Dr Fabrice Bardy, a specialist audiologist with international clinical training. Every appointment begins with an otoscopic assessment to confirm the indication and rule out contraindications, followed by the procedure itself and a final check.

What to expect

Your appointment, step by step.

  1. Otoscopy assessment. A careful visual examination of the ear canal and eardrum to confirm wax is present and identify any contraindications.
  2. Microsuction procedure. Performed under microscope vision. Most patients describe a mild whooshing or rustling sound; the procedure itself is painless.
  3. Post-procedure check. Confirmation that both ear canals are clear, and advice on how to minimise future wax build-up.
  4. Optional hearing check. If hearing concerns remain after wax removal, a screening audiogram can be added during the same visit (additional charge).

FAQ

Earwax removal — common questions

Is microsuction safe?
Microsuction is widely regarded as the safest method of earwax removal. It is performed under direct vision using a binocular microscope and low-pressure suction, avoiding the risks associated with ear syringing or irrigation.
Do I need to use ear drops beforehand?
Not usually. Unlike syringing, microsuction does not require softening drops in most cases. If your wax is particularly impacted, we will advise pre-treatment when you book.
How much does earwax removal cost?
Earwax removal by microsuction at Bristol Hearing Clinic costs £100 for both ears. The appointment includes a pre-procedure otoscopy assessment.
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take 20–30 minutes, including the otoscopy assessment and the procedure itself. Same-day appointments are routinely available.
Will earwax removal improve my hearing?
If reduced hearing has been caused by wax occluding the ear canal, removing the wax restores normal sound transmission immediately. If hearing remains reduced after wax removal, we can perform a comprehensive hearing assessment in the same visit.
